Business travel 2026: seven questions for Tarja Widell about the trends

Business travel is back – but more considered. Tarja Widell, Head of Business Area Way Travel, on sustainability, bleisure, travel policies and how travellers' behaviour has changed.

Business travel is back – but more considered. We see companies travelling with a clearer purpose and a focus on business value. It is less about travelling often and more about travelling right. At the same time, the demands for flexibility, cost control and a smooth experience for every traveller are growing.

How do you see sustainability affecting business travel today?

Sustainability is no longer optional. It is a natural part of every decision. More people choose the train where possible and want better insight into their climate footprint. We are also seeing a clear shift towards fewer trips – but with greater impact.

How has the behaviour of business travellers changed?

People travel more thoughtfully. Instead of quick trips, they plan longer stays and combine several meetings in the same journey. It saves time, reduces the impact and often makes for a better whole.

Bleisure – are you seeing it grow?

Yes, and it is clearly noticeable. Staying an extra day or two has become more and more common. It gives room for recovery and makes the trip more valuable – both for the individual and for the company.

Do you have any simple tips for people who travel a lot for work?

Plan with flexibility. Book in good time. Think about the whole: can you combine more meetings? Is the train an option? And one simple tip that makes a big difference – travel light. Hand luggage saves both time and energy.

What does a modern travel policy need to include?

A balance between cost, sustainability and experience. It should be clear, but also flexible enough to work in everyday life. A good travel policy does not just set limits – it helps people make better decisions every time they travel.

What is the most important thing Way can help with right now?
