Why Istanbul works for conferences
Istanbul gives you something a European city break can't: a genuine change of context, three and a half hours from home. Fifteen million people, two continents, and layers of history that make the conversations at dinner better than they would have been anywhere else. Practically it holds up – large hotels with real conference capacity, low prices for the standard, and direct flights. The traffic is the one thing that needs planning, and that is our job.
Hotels and meeting venues in Istanbul
Istanbul has conference capacity on a scale few cities match, and the rates are a fraction of Western Europe for the same standard. Swissotel The Bosphorus sits in its own grounds above the strait with extensive meeting facilities and room for large groups. Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus is the other dependable option for volume. Ciragan Palace Kempinski is an actual Ottoman palace on the water – the choice when the trip needs to be memorable rather than efficient. Traffic is the thing to plan around, so we place the group on the right side of the strait for the programme.
Activities and dinners in Istanbul
A private boat on the Bosphorus is the one to build the trip around – an afternoon between Europe and Asia with palaces and wooden villas along both banks, and it doubles as transport to dinner. The Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are a morning with a guide who can make sense of them. A cooking class turns into a proper group exercise, and the Grand Bazaar works better as a guided hunt with a task than as free time. Evenings are long here and the food is the reason.

How far is it from the airport?
Between 45 minutes and well over an hour, depending on traffic and which side of the strait the hotel is on. We build that into the schedule rather than hoping for the best.
When is the best time for a conference in Istanbul?
April to June and September to October. Midsummer gets hot and crowded, and winter is grey and wet, so the shoulder seasons are clearly the ones to aim for.
